Driving into History
Black Women, Cars, and Courage
This exhibit invites visitors to experience the past through a powerful blend of storytelling and visual media. Created by the Merze Tate Explorers, this multimedia exhibition brings to life the stories of Black women who shaped the 20th century. Through writing, photography, and videography, students reimagined historic moments, recreating images inspired by Picturing Freedom: African Americans and Their Cars and connecting them to the present day in meaningful, personal ways.
Developed in collaboration with the Gilmore Car Museum, the exhibit transforms the museum into both a classroom and a creative production space. Historic vehicles, carefully matched to their eras, serve as authentic backdrops that ground each story in its historical context. With guidance from creative professionals and community partners, the students crafted a compelling narrative that blends education, artistry, and lived experience.
On view through March 2027, this exhibit highlights the impact of collaboration and the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices. More than a display of images and stories, Driving into History reflects a new generation using media to inform, inspire, and ensure that these important histories continue to be seen and heard.
