Send Off Summer September 9th-11th at the Gilmore Car Museum
Horsepower, chrome, and nostalgia will highlight an end-of-summer weekend set for September 9 - 11 at the Gilmore Car Museum!
The weekend kicks off on Friday, September 9th with a Movie Night Under the Stars featuring George Lucas’ film classic American Graffiti and will conclude on Sunday, September 11th with the 22nd annual Muscle Cars PLUS Car Show and Swap Meet.
Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Ron Howard, and several other young and yet-to-be discovered actors will take to the big outdoor screen Friday night at sunset. Steeped in car culture, American Graffiti (1973, Rated PG) is a nostalgic coming-of-age film set on the streets of small-town America and features a diner and gas station reminiscent of the Museum’s very own iconic structures.
Movie goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets on Friday, September 9th (rain date will be Saturday, 9/10) to enjoy the outdoor movie on the lawn of the Museum’s historic campus. Admission for this fundraising event is $10 per carload for the film, sponsored by Cole Motors of Kalamazoo.
Then, on Sunday, September 11th the Museum’s 90-acre historic campus will be taken over by the 22nd annual Muscle Cars PLUS Car Show and Swap Meet.
Hundreds of muscle cars of the 1960s and ’70s will fill the grounds during what has become the area’s largest muscle car gathering. The PLUS in this event’s name refers to antique, classic, and special interest vehicles that will also be on hand.
This immensely popular event, sponsored by the West Michigan Muscle Car Club, will be open to the public from 9am – 4pm, rain or shine. This year’s special featured vehicle classes celebrate the 1962 – 1973 Chevy Nova and the 1967 – 1973 Chevy Camaro.
There is always something for everyone at this event, including a live DJ, an area with cars for sale, and a vast parts swap meet among the hundreds of show cars.
Participants can show their muscle cars or set up in the vendor’s swap meet for $20 each, while the general public will be admitted for only $12.00 per person—that includes visiting the entire Gilmore Car Museum campus and all exhibits at no extra charge, and those under 11 are FREE!
And, don’t forget to check out the final week of the special exhibit “Mid-Century Performance” which features the Little Deuce Coupe of Beach Boys fame, and many of the nation’s most coveted hot rods and muscle cars. This limited engagement exhibit will be coming to a close on September 19th.
Regardless of when your end-of-summer officially ends, you can be sure top it off with a bit of horsepower, chrome, and nostalgia at the Gilmore Car Museum September 9th-11th!
